Hydrocarbon Exploration Research Programme (HERU)

    Programme leader: Dr Peter Gatt

Hydrocarbons include petroleum and gas which are the main source of imported energy in Malta. Despite their vital importance to the national economy, this country still lacks a hydrocarbon research commitment. A particular niche for research is carbonate platforms (Malta is a carbonate platform) and their particular hydrocarbon environments.

    Projects within HERU:

MIGRATE: Dr Gatt is Member of COST action MIGRATE on gas hydrates in Europe. MIGRATE investigates current technologies related to gas hydrate exploration, production and monitoring, with an emphasis on European activity. This requires covering various activities within different disciplines, all of which contribute to the technology development needed for future cost-effective gas production.

    GEOfieldMalta

    Coordinator: Dr Peter Gatt

Due to the diversity of carbonates and excellent outcrops, the Maltese Islands can become a world class geological fieldwork location. This programme intends to make the Maltese Islands a hub for geological fieldwork studies on carbonates by attracting overseas academic and mineral company interests. Two field guides have been produced and a Carbonate workshop was convened in April 2018.

    Sponsors: Lundin Petroleum, Statoil (Equinor)

    Geopark

Partners: MCAST, University of Malta, University of Modena, Ambjent Malta

The scope of the project is the identification of geological sites in the Maltese Islands for UNESCO geopark status. Meetings are ongoing with partners on the delimitation of a national geopark.
