Learning Difficulties and Disabilities

Students with learning difficulties or disabilities, who are considering applying for a course at any of the Institutes of MCAST, should make an appointment with a member of the Support Team before they apply for the course. Prospective applicants who make an appointment are offered a confidential interview to assess their particular needs and to determine what level and type of support the College can offer in order for them to follow the courses of their choice. Special needs support will only be offered to those students who prior to their entry on a course would have registered with MCAST Support Team their learning difficulty or disability and made the necessary arrangements to follow the course.

The Basic Skills Unit (BSU)

Students on Level 1 Foundation courses who have no formal qualifications are given an Initial Screening Test in Maltese, English and Application of Numbers by the Basic Skills Unit of MCAST. If the Initial Screening Test indicates that the students' skills' levels fall significantly below that of Level 1 support is given in these subjects.

This support is given through specialized programmes, in small groups and is complementary to mainstream support in the subjects. Once students reach the required level they are then allowed to follow mainstream support in Maltese, English and Maths. The Basic Skills Unit also offers support in IT to students whose level of IT is below the requirements.

The BSU centre is based in the Library and Learning Resource Centre of MCAST on the Main Campus at Corradino. The centre is open to individual students who request assistance with Maltese, English, basic Maths and basic IT applications.
