MCAST ICT Students visit the European Parliament in Brussels
24-Jun-2010
Thirty six students and four lecturers from the MCAST Institute of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) were invited for a three-day visit to the European Parliament and the other European institutions in Brussels, Belgium. The aim of this visit was to get acquainted with the European governance system. This visit was partially financed by the European Parliament under the 'Opinion Multiplier Scheme'. Besides the places of interest, the group visited the Maltese Representation to the European Union and the European Parliament, where the whole group was greeted by two Maltese MEPs, namely Dr Simon Busuttil and Prof. Edward Scicluna. Both MEPs devoted an amount of time to explain the functions of the European Parliament. This meeting was followed by a parliamentary preliminary hearing on the ‘Greek Financial Crisis’ that was going on at the time. Mario Pace, Acting Director at the Institute of Information and Communication Technology stated, “Our students benefited from this visit to Brussels as they gained a better understanding of how the European Union is governed and were also exposed to different cultures and new experiences outside their restricted parameter”. Mario Zammit, Group Leader and Co-ordinator commented, “I was really impressed by the amount of teamwork and solidarity shown by the team. The experience gained is enormous, especially for a number of students who went abroad for the first time”.
