Course Description

This course is a continuation in the career of a Deck
Officer in the merchant marina leading to the issue of a
Certificate of Competence as a Chief Mate. The training
provided is at management level and candidates
attending this course are expected to dedicate a lot
of time to their studies and are also expected to wear
a merchant marine uniform whilst undergoing training
ashore.

The Maritime Institute boasts a good reputation
for discipline and all Officers are expected to abide by
a Code of Conduct whilst attending the Chief Mate
Course and to actively participate in events organised
by the Maritime Institute.

Study/Course Delivery

All lecturers and Instructors are appropriately qualified in accordance with the provisions of the STCW Convention. They have a good appreciation and understanding of the Chief Mate training programme and objectives. Where training is conducted using a simulator, the instructors have received appropriate guidance in instructional techniques and adequate operational experience on the simulator and related equipment.

Assessment

The students are assessed for theory and practice including oral exam at the end of the course. These assessments are part of the requirements of the STCW quality standards. Where conducting of assessments involve the use of simulators the students are examined in the practical experience of simulator to the satisfaction of the examiner.

Maintain safe navigation through the use of modern navigation systems to assist command decision-making
2. Plan and ensure safe loading, stowage, securing, care during voyage and unloading of cargoes
3. Monitor and control compliance with legislative requirements
4. Maintain safety and security of the ship’s crew and passengers and the operational condition of life-saving, fire fighting and other safety systems.

Career Opportunities

The Chief Mate Course is designed for students who already hold OIC Navigational watch certificate and have completed the required sea-service on seagoing ships in that capacity. On satisfactory conclusion of the course and examinations the students are issued with a Chief Mate certificate of competency. The certificate of competency is awarded by the Registrar – General of Shipping and Seaman, Transport Malta.
